Leaves Are My Pals

Well, I survived day one of VBS (Vacation Bible School) yesterday  -- phew!!  We had a typical Day 1 with everything running late, but I have a great group of  ten Grade 4/5 kids to call mine for the week.

Our theme this year is India, in particular supporting the Dalits who are the lowest of the lowest cast there.  It breaks my heart to even think of what they have to endure....they can't draw water from a public well by themselves and have to rely on someone else to do it for them, which very rarely happens because they are considered so "unclean" that nobody will.  If they do it themselves, they are beaten and sometimes even killed!  They basically have no rights whatsoever, no schooling for education or jobs and many other horrible restrictions.  As part of VBS this year, we are raising money to send some missionaries who work among the Dalits so a well can be dug in their area.  This will allow them to draw their own water for their families, village and crops.  Last year we raised $1,500 for an orphanage in Uganda so I'm hoping we can do the same or more this year for the Dalits.

After a short nap to recover from Day 1 (what can I say, I'm not as young as I used to be LOL!) I made this CAS card for the Pals Paper Arts Colour Challenge.  I found this great Studio G leaf image at one of the LSS I visit and was beyond happy as it is as close to PTI's Turning Leaf set as I'll get for now!

The gray panel was embossed with Diamonds in the Rough, and the ribbon came from a past ribbon bin diving adventure at Michael's.  I actually dug for another 15 minutes trying to find a second spool because I liked it so much, but came up empty (insert pouty face).  One of these days I just may tip that ruddy ribbon bin over so it is easier to dig through...sure the managers would love that one - not!! Yes, I definitely have a love hate relationship with that bin LOL!

Today I'm off for Day 2 of VBS and am wearing a gorgeous sari!!   Thanks to a wonderful lady who called her friends, we have about 25 of them on loan for the leaders to be able to wear if they want to.  The beading and embroidery work on mine is amazing!  Hopefully it won't get too hot today or I'll be melting!

Better run!  Hope to be able to past again soon.

What's In It?

Stamps:  Studio G Leaf Stamp, Fancy Flexible Phrases
Paper:  Basic Grey, So Saffron, White
Ink:  Chocolate Chip

Love your CAS card Marisa, you are such a sweet girl! I learned a little today, I did not know about the Dalits of India, so sad. Thanks for always coming by my blog.

beautiful colours!! LOL have to laugh about the ribbon trip because I'm the same way...I think they should have two bins, a discard bin and the one with ribbon...you put the ones you don't want in the discard bin. They would sell more. Today sounds fun!!! I love the Indian culture and at my old school, we had most of the city's Indo-Canadian population (the school is very multi-cultural...one thing I will miss ). The saris and dancing and food were fabulous :) Have fun and have another nap!! LOL

Hey Marisa! We're in VBS this week too! Which one are you doing? We're doing High Seas Adventure. Our oldest is la Crew Leader and the boys are in it.

Such a classy card too, great colors, very clean and organic feeling.

Your sari sounds gorgeous, Marisa! Had to laugh about your need for a nap yesterday. I find myself needing naps all the time--not just after a rowdy first day of VBS!! Great leaf card. I love the simplicity. Stay cool :)

Ah, yes, I remember those VBS days...rewarding but oh, so tiring! You'll have to post a picture of your sari...it sounds gorgeous. I love that leaf stamp, btw, and the CAS card you created. I can see why you'd be digging for more ribbon - it's very pretty! :-)

I've never had to participate in VBS except as a kid! Our church doesn't offer it but another local church does and they do an AWESOME job!

Love your card, Marisa! Striking with the simplicity of layout and stamping!

Beautiful card, Marisa. I love how you've used the colours in such an elegant way. The leaf image is wonderful! I hope you enjoyed wearing your sari today, and I hope you get to raise lots of money to help with building the well.
